Notes

Plants have huge leaves - a highly decorative accent in a perennial garden.
Once established rhubarb can withstand drought but will do better with a bit of supplemental water during extended dry weather. Plants will rot if too wet. For best results amend a 1-2 foot deep hole with good compost before planting and keep plants mulched with compost or straw. Never cover the crown or it will rot.
Remove flower buds to encourage plant to put energy into stalk and leaf growth unless growing it for decorative purposes. Do not harvest stems until second year.
Rhubarb is a long-lived, low maintenace food crop. Stems are excellent for eating in early to mid-spring. Leaves are poisonous but make good compost. Good heat resistance, moderate growth rate.
